Children’s Book: Rosie’s Big Secret
In April 2025, Bridget Meranda published her first children’s book, “Rosie’s Big Secret”. This book was a vision of Bridget’s for a few years. After she had a child who struggled to share the trauma they experienced and watched her struggle to heal after their disclosure, Bridget knew more resources were needed for children. She also worked with many children who had difficulty talking about traumatic events they experienced. After seeing a pattern of children feeling fear about sharing details of their trauma and seeking help, she knew she wanted to create a book that encourages children to gain the courage to talk about what happened to them and feel the power of not being allow and being supported.
When children keep secrets, it can begin to impact their mental health as they increase feelings of guilt and shame.
Where did the idea for the book come from?
Bridget knew she wanted to write a book for children to help them talk about difficult things but was struggling to find a concept that would be engaging and impactful. Then the idea hit Bridget after watching a video and learning that flamingo moms lose their color when they are taking care of their young. They lose their color when they are feeding their young and not getting enough nutrition. After hearing this fact about flamingos, Bridget knew this was the key to the story she wanted to convey.
What is the story about?
Rosie is a joyful, vibrant flamingo until a scary experience turns her world upside down. Her feathers lose their brightness, her heart feels heavy, and a big secret keeps her from being her true self. Rosie held onto her secret and she lost her color. In the story, Rosie builds the courage to tell her secret to her mom. When she does tell her secret she begins to feel like herself again and regains her beautiful bright pink color.
"Rosie's Big Secret" is a touching story about the weight of secrets, the courage to speak up, and the healing that comes from trusting those who care. This book gently explores the impact of holding onto secrets, helping children understand that they are never alone, no matter how big their worries may seem.
Bridget wrote the book in a way that it can connect with children for any reason as she never reveals the secret Rosie was keeping.
